Welcome to my website on living imperfectly green! As an
imperfect human who cares about the environment, I have created this blog to
share my journey through living green as well as discuss some everyday green
topics. I am by no means perfect in my approach to helping the environment, but
I believe it’s important to encourage any amount of effort in creating positive
change.
My interest in the natural world started when I was a young
child watching Animal Planet on the tv. My favorite shows at the time were The
Most Extreme, where they counted down the top ten organisms/ animal behaviors in
given categories, and Meerkat Manor, where a camera crew followed a family of meerkats
as a narrator delineated the family dynamic and drama. I loved animals and the
planet to the point of having buckets of stuffed animals in my bedroom closet and
constantly pestering my parents to recycle more.
One of the key things I remember from my elementary school
studies on Native Americans is the fact that they strove to use every piece of
the animal that was hunted and respected that animal’s life sacrifice. I kept
that piece of information with me as a foundational way to approach life and
the natural resources we use.
Into my college years, I knew I wanted to major in something
that had the potential for a career in environmental work. Coming from an engineer
town while also being naturally inclined towards STEM topics and classes, I
decided to pursue biosystems (environmental) engineering. Now with that degree,
I am navigating adulthood and the career paths of that major. As I maneuver my
primary career moves, I am also wanting to participate in the world of social
media. I love scrolling through Instagram and Tik Tok, and I come across plenty
of conventional influencers with lavish and envious lifestyles. While I don’t
expect to become large online, I’m eager to participate in that world without
compromising my beliefs on environmentalism and anti-consumerism. I hope to encourage
people to think about how their current lifestyles impact the environment and then
educate people on how to make more environmental choices.
As an imperfect human, the green changes that I’ve made in
my life leave plenty of room for improvement. That being said, I hope to
encourage the everyday person to feel comfortable in making changes, even if
they are small. Rather than have a small amount of people live green perfectly,
it’s better to have a larger amount of people living green imperfectly.
